Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta

 title=

Enrolled in the national cultural treasures since 1972.

The Pieve welcomes visitors with its monumental white stone portal – carved between 1534 and 1536 by Giovanni Lorenzo Sormani da Osteno – inviting them to enter the womb of its ancient Romanesque structure. Crossing the threshold, the visitor is welcomed by the majestic nave flanked, on both sides, by wooden altars erected between 1540 and 1700. Numerous frescoes and paintings decorate the walls of the building, masterpieces made by painters of the calibre of Joseph Heinz the Younger (17th century) and of the Romanino school (16th century). Some wooden sculptures, such as the sixteenth-century crucifix or the magnificent ancona of the main altar, by Maffeo and Andrea Olivieri, enrich the artistic heritage preserved inside.
